Introduction / History

The Valpei are an indigenous people group of Vanuatu, living in Penama Province on the island of Pentecost. Their communities are found in rural villages where local traditions, clan relationships, and ties to homeland shape social identity. Their history has been passed down primarily through oral tradition and community memory rather than written records.

Their language, Valpei, is part of the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, linking them linguistically with other island peoples across Vanuatu while preserving distinctive cultural traits within their own community.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Valpei live in small village settlements where subsistence gardening, fishing, and close family cooperation are central to daily life. Gardens produce staple foods such as taro, yam, cassava, and bananas, while fishing and gathering from nearby coastal waters or forest areas supplement the diet.

Homes are constructed from locally available materials, and extended family networks reinforce strong social bonds and shared responsibilities. Their language is used in everyday communication within the community, while Bislama—Vanuatu's creole language—is often used for interaction with people from other groups or regions.

Access to formal services such as healthcare, quality education, and advanced transportation is limited, and travel to larger towns or centers on Pentecost often requires long journeys by foot or boat.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Valpei people identify with Christianity, and church life plays a significant role in both community gatherings and worship. Christian teaching and practice provide social cohesion and a shared framework for many within the community.

At the same time, traditional spiritual beliefs connected to ancestors, the natural environment, and customary practices continue to influence how some individuals view spiritual realities. These traditional elements may coexist with Christian expressions rather than being fully replaced, resulting in a blended religious landscape rather than one firmly rooted only in biblical teaching.

There is no confirmed complete Bible translation in the Valpei language, and available Scripture portions are limited. This restricts direct and comprehensive engagement with the full message of Scripture in the language most used within the community.

What Are Their Needs?

The Valpei need clear and faithful gospel teaching that fosters personal faith in Jesus Christ and helps people understand biblical truth deeply rather than through surface cultural forms of religion.

A key need is Bible translation and Scripture access in the Valpei language. Wider availability of God's Word in the language used daily by the community would support discipleship, strengthen believers, and help establish solid biblical foundations within local churches.

There is also a need for faithfully grounded local leaders who can teach Scripture clearly, disciple believers, and help guide communities in lives shaped by the gospel rather than mixed belief systems.

Practical challenges affect daily life as well. Limited access to healthcare, education, and transportation can hinder both physical well?being and opportunities for sustained spiritual growth and community development.
